Lake Bafa National Park

The Bafa Lake, or Latmus as it was named in antiquity, used to be a gulf of the Aegean Sea until the Classical period. The sea passage was gradually closed by the alluvial mass brought by Büyük Menderes River (Maeander River) and, subsequently the region lost its economically strategic advantage. The ruins of Heraclia, an affluent city during the Hellenic and Roman periods, lay within the boundaries of the lake. Heraclia’s history dates back to 700 BC and it was conquered by Alexander the Great. The region had a prominent place during the expansion of Christianity and the ruins of monasteries and caves painted by hermits can still be seen. To southwest of the lake are the Besparmak mountains, a popular trekking destination because of its unusual geological rock formations and stunning lake views. Not far from Bodrum-Milas airport, it is an ideal destination for a weekend trip. Small hotels and restaurants provide accommodation and food nearby.
