Over the last 18 months, we have witnessed a revolution in the satellite communications industry, with the commercial launch of the first LEO (Low Earth Orbit) constellation Starlink from SpaceX, revolutionising maritime communications as we know it.

54m Feadship - Northwest Passage
A 54.9m Feadship has successfully transited the Northwest Passage from east to west in August 2023!
e3 installed a Starlink Maritime system with twin panels in June before the yacht headed north. This gave them the opportunity to see how the service operated with the reduced number of Starlink satellites at these high latitudes. The service was consistent throughout the passage.
The Captain reported “The service has been good, we did notice a drop when video calling at times. Whatsapp calls frequently dropped out but Zoom calls never. Uploading files and pictures was quite slow but downloading quick.”
The yacht used more than 3TB of data consistently over August. As e3 suspected, the latency increased at the most northerly point but was still useable.
SY Shagala Bagala - The MED
Captain Simon Tibbot from SY Shagala Bagala is another happy customer. He has reported download speeds of 392Mbps whilst sailing at 10 knots with a heel of 30 degrees!
The panel was installed on the ensign staff mount which was designed and constructed in carbon fibre by BM Composites on Mallorca and suitable for sailing yachts of all sizes.
In addition to the Starlink service, captain Simon contracted e3's Big Data Europe 4G and 5G Pay-as-you-Go service as a back-up and said he is “very happy and grateful” for e3’s delivery and support.
