Much respected & loved English Harbour community member, Lisa Nicholson, passes away...

Caroline Blatter

Her tall stately figure was a familiar presence throughout English Harbour. ...
A remarkable inspiring lady, who shared so much love and life with Antigua...

Honoured member of the English Harbour community Lisa Nicholson passed away peacefully at home on the 20th of March 2023 surrounded by loved ones.

Lisa Nicholson

Lisa was known by almost everyone who lives in the community or was closely connected to it, as residents or visiting sailors. The success that Antigua now enjoys as the yachting hub of the Caribbean can be traced all the way back to the 1950’s when the Nicholson Family started their own yacht chartering business.

Lisa's familiar graceful elegant presence at events over the years brought stability to the changing world around us - her calm kindness, wisdom and positive energy so appreciated by so many.
Her spirit of volunteerism was unshakeable, always willing to share her experiences, advice or a helping hand, she was a true community anchor.

Lisa was born in Manhattan, New York in June of 1934 to Roxana and Edward  Dodd. She was raised in Cornwall, Connecticut and educated at The Putney School and Radcliffe College. She met her husband Desmond Nicholson on the sailing yacht Freelance while cruising with her family in the Caribbean in 1956.

Together they built a life devoted to family, community and the development of the yachting industry in Antigua.  She was an active member of many community organizations including Friends of Holberton Hospital, The Sunnyside School, and The St Paul’s Crisis Intervention Group. Singing was a passion throughout her life and she was a devoted member of Expression Choir.  A strong advocate for the protection of the natural environment she was a founding member of The Environmental Awareness Group.

Lisa is predeceased by her beloved husband of 50 years, Desmond Nicholson and their son Christopher Nicholson. She is survived by her sister Roxana Laughlin of Cornwall, Connecticut and her brother Ted Dodd and his wife Elena, of Putney, Vermont as well as her three daughters and their spouses, Sarah Nicholson and Roger Reed, Nancy Nicholson, Celia and Scott Kelsick.
Lisa is also survived by nine grandchildren, Kelsey, Lia, Kai, Louis, Marley, Alex, Emma, Ria & Zara, and her great granddaughter, Amaya.

Like us, many will recall seeing Lisa on her beloved Pigeon Beach - for her daily walk and 4 o'clock swim...
her spirit and legacy live on, through her family, friends and all she has left us.

She truly loved her 88 years here on earth and now flies free to join her late husband and son.

Her service will be held at The Baxter Memorial Methodist Church in English Harbour
on the 20th of April 2023 at 2 pm
followed by a celebration of her life at The Dows Hill Interpretation Centre from 5pm - 8pm.
