Whale Watching

Each year, approximately 5,000 male and female Humpback Whales migrate to the protected waters of the Dominican Republic. In 1986, Samana Bay was established as an official sanctuary for marine mammals and has now become acknowledged as the winter home of nearly a third of the Atlantic Ocean's Humpback whale population.

Famous for 'singing' to attract mates or to challenge other would-be suitors, the Humpback’s songs can last up to 20 minutes and can be heard from more than 20 miles away. Humpbacks are by far the major attraction in the Dominican Republic, but Sperm and Pilot whales are also seen here – as well as a variety of dolphins, including Bottlenose, Rissos and Spinner, which all frequent the coastal waters.
