About Barbuda

Support Antigua’s beautiful sister island, Barbuda - don’t hesitate to include this little gem on the yacht’s charter or crew itinerary!

Antigua’s beautifully unique sister island, Barbuda, is a great option on the yacht’s charter or crew itinerary - as one of the last truly undiscovered treasures of the Eastern Caribbean!

At 62 square miles in area/15 miles long and 8 miles wide, with stunning pink sandy beaches, this low-lying island (the highest point being only 125 feet above sea level) remains a suitably remote destination. Yet, lying only 27 miles north of Antigua, Barbuda is within easy reach of her ‘sister island’. The anchorages on the south and west coasts are mainly calm – protected by a barrier reef. Most of the 1700 inhabitants live in or around the main town of Codrington – known as ‘the village’ – which is serviced by regular daily flights and helicopter charters from Antigua, as well as a high-speed ferry service on the Barbuda Express from Antigua.

The untouched Codrington Lagoon is not only the home to one of the Caribbean’s largest Frigate Bird colonies but it is also an important breeding ground for the Barbuda lobster. Where else in the world is lobster more often seen on the menu than chicken?!

Other hidden secrets include: ancient Amerindian sites and ruins waiting to be explored; one of the rarest small birds in the world (the Barbuda Warbler) to look out for; caves and sink holes to hike to; and a choice of fabulous dive sites – including many exciting wrecks.

The Barbudan people are incredibly friendly and welcoming. If you are looking to go for a weekend or for some relaxing time out, a choice of good value guest houses come well recommended for providing a great ‘crew getaway’ option. Explore the island by ATV or rental car or take advantage of the calm waters and constant breeze on the 17-mile west coast beach (which is one of the best venues in the whole Caribbean for kite and windsurfing). Beyond this, there is a selection of recommended and professional tour operators listed, who offer a full range of adaptable tours to suit all ages and requests – including the increasingly popular sport of Bone Fishing, as well as deep sea sport fishing.

Nobu Restaurant is a fashionable and popular signature restaurant on stunning Princess Dianna Beach and even has a helicopter pad onsite for guests who want to fly over from Antigua for lunch ahead of the arrival of the yacht. Further up on the north west coast at Cedar Tree Point, is the Barbuda Belle restaurant and resort, a must for lunch or a weekend getaway. There are also lots of little local eateries to enjoy.

Work continues on Barbuda with the ‘Peace, Love, and Happiness’ Resort & Golf Course Development (PHL) at Coco Point and a new jetport with extended Runway and helipad adjacent to the Resort at Palmetto.

The Tourist Information Office is located close to the Lagoon Wharf, and its friendly team is headed by Eleanor Thomas (Tel: +1(268) 562 7065/66).
