About La Spezia, Viareggio, Livorno and Scarlino

This region of Liguria and Tuscany hosts a multitude of places to visit on charter or be based – for short periods or longer winter months. From picturesque fishing villages and harbours popular with famous poets, quiet anchorages, white sandy beaches, to purpose built large marinas and world renowned shipyards.

La Spezia is a prominent military and naval station between Genoa and Pisa and also an important commercial port with several marinas and yards dominating the skyline. Also close to the five villages that make up the stunning Cinque Terra – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a must to explore when visiting this area.

Portovenere, is a charming picture perfect harbor, with medieval streets and brightly coloured houses. The village is dominated by its castle with pretty church on the promontory. Nearby is Byrons Cave, where the poet used to swim - a great quiet anchorage to go with a yacht.

Nicknamed the ‘Tuscan Riviera’, the coastal city of Viareggio in Tuscany has the blues of the Sea on one side, with the white marble peaks of the Massa Carrara on the other! Viareggio is a thriving city it is today. With long wide sandy beaches stretching for more than 20km, and The Passeggiata, a long boulevard along the sea which is lined with cafés, ice cream parlours and hotels, Viareggio is a popular destination for both Italians and foreign visitors.

Within the marine industry, Viareggio means Shipyards, boatbuilding and Perini Navi! Many yachts use Viareggio as a winter base, due to the good marine services and infrastructure.

The sea flows through the Medicean canals right into the old quarters of the city, give Livorno unique charm and a link to its history, tradition and culture. Livorno is home to the prestigious Naval Academy where Italian Navy officers have been trained for over a century, and which hosts an annual Sailing Trophy with participants from all over the world.
