About the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is an island nation with a deeply ingrained relationship with the sea. Nowhere in the UK is more than 72 miles from the coast and with over 6,000 islands and islets, the vast coastline remains relatively unspoilt, providing a unique rewarding cruising ground in a country steeped in history.

From cultural arts, festivals, historical buildings and museums scattered around the country, the fun of Cowes week on the Isle of Wight, the tranquillity and breath-taking scenery of the Scottish Highlands; long stretches of golden sands, surf beaches and fresh seafood in quaint restaurants on the north coast of Cornwall, to mooring in redeveloped Victorian Docks in the bright lights of the City of London, there really is much to explore.

For superyachts thinking of refits or scheduled maintenance, consider the shipyards in the south: world renown Pendennis Shipyard and excellent marine services both in Falmouth and on the south coast make this an ideal planned refit stop. Oyster Yachts also have superb facilities and expert skilled craftsman in Southampton, offering refit, repair and maintenance services to large yachts.

From expert Yacht Services and provisioning, to support with logistics, event and entertainment contacts, medical kits, shipping, security, legal advice, electronics, refrigeration, crew pla cement, IT and data roaming solutions, crew uniforms, rigging and sail lofts – to name a few… there is a wealth of expert knowledge available.

We have used the location terms South Coast for those services based around Southampton and Portsmouth, and South West for those services around Falmouth – which only determines where a service is located, not the region they work in, as most of the recommended services will travel to wherever you are based and then continue to offer support as a yacht moves around the world.

With a multitude of courses available for all positions on board and world class crew training facilities, including Warsash Maritime Academy, crew can pursue their interests or update qualifications on a variety of MCA approved courses - or take time off, with International travel being so easily accessible!

London

As the United Kingdom’s capital city, London is one of the few major cities in the world where a superyacht can make its way right into the heart of the city – berthing in redeveloped old Victorian docks!

Entering the wide estuary of the Thames on the East Coast by the Isle of Sheppey, yachts will retrace the centuries old historical sailing route to the city, following the main large shipping channels, then river banks slowly closing together and narrowing to form the iconic image of The River Thames, with well known landmarks and historical sites on the shores.

Captains must bear in mind that The Queen Elizabeth Bridge at Dartford has an air draft of 54.1m – the only other obstacle after St Katharine Docks being well known Tower Bridge – which will rise and open to let yachts through.

Berthing is available at the Royal Docks, then after the tidal barrier in Woolwich Reach, yachts can enter and moor at West India Docks / Canary Wharf – or the more purpose built Camper & Nicholson managed St Katharine Docks – which is limited to accommodating three 40m yachts at any one time. After Tower Bridge and The Tower of London, yachts can berth alongside HMS Belfast – an old Royal Navy Cruiser from World War II.

The South Coast

Southampton & Portsmouth are very active port cities in the county of Hampshire, on the south Coast of England, with Southampton only 70 miles south west of London, with good air and rail links to the rest of Europe (Southampton Airport).

There is a plethora of world class yacht services here on the south coast – between Southampton, Lymington, Hamble & Portsmouth: from Refit expertise at Oyster Yachts at Saxon Wharf and the newly improved infrastructure and haul out facilities at Trafalgar Wharf in Portsmouth – major superyacht refits can be undertaken, with expert skilled craftsman available as well as all the professional services one would expect in maritime cities.

World renown Warsash Maritime Academy lies across the water from Southampton offering a multitude of MCA approved courses for marine professionals – the perfect opportunity for crew to update qualifications whilst a yacht is in the yard!

There is much ashore for discovering in Southampton, from the SeaCity Museum with its interactive model of the Titanic, art galleries, good shopping facilities, music concerts – the Mayflower Theatre with the latest West End productions, Cowes week on the Isle of Wight – to stunning countryside in the New Forest and South Downs National Park with some wonderfully quaint picturesque English Villages (& Pubs!).

20 miles east lies the port city and naval base of Portsmouth – known for its historical maritime heritage centred around Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, on Portsea Island. Home to the national Museum of the Royal Navy, the Tudor Mary Rose Ship, Nelson’s HMS Victory, the fleet of the Royal Navy’s modern war ships and aircraft carrier, to cross channel Ferries, a stop in Portsmouth is always quite a spectacle! Gunwharf Quay Marina offers very easy access to the Solent and can accommodate yachts up to 80m LOA.

The South West

The South West has the port of Falmouth at its Centre: the city of Truro 11 miles North East - with direct rail links to London Paddington, and Newquay Airport another 13 miles NE on the North Cornish Coast – with connections to Gatwick or able to accommodate private charter flights.

Falmouth is known for its deep natural harbor on the Fal Estuary, with a historical maritime heritage and strong connection to the sea, highlighted in the National Maritime Museum of Cornwall. Landmark hilltop Pendennis Castle built by Henry VIII in the 16th Century has commanding views of the estuary from Pendennis Point.

With world renown Pendennis Shipyard and some excellent services, a stop in Falmouth for planned refit work, or with guests on board to enjoy all this stunning county has to offer is a must.

From surf beaches on the North Coast, to long stretches of golden sands, quaint fishing villages – modern creativity in art galleries with Falmouth building a name for itself as a cultural and festival destination, spectacular gardens & historic houses, world famous Open Air The Minack Theatre perched on the cliffs high above the Atlantic Ocean, to some wonderful gastronomic delights & fresh seafood in quaint restaurants.
