About Cartagena

The port of Cartagena enjoys a privileged position within a large natural harbour, approximately half way between Gibraltar and Mallorca. With a Naval history dating from the year 1784 there has always been a strong presence of shipbuilding and repairs within the harbour. This continues today with one of the largest shipyards in Spain occupying the western side of the harbour serving the Superyacht industry as well as Naval and commercial shipping.

The city of Cartagena and the surrounding region are benefiting from a recent input of investment and this is evident in the impressive development of the new port waterfront promenade, bars, restaurants and shops. With the opening of Yacht Port Cartagena and the recently opened new museum of Marine Archaeology, the harbour front has seen a complete and sympathetic makeover in recent years and now provides a pleasant environment, working in harmony with the nearby historical buildings of the ancient city. It is a popular stop over for cruise ships.

There are two airports nearby; Murcia San Javier (just 20 minutes drive from Cartagena), which has flights to the UK, and Alicante (50 minutes from Cartagena), which provides a range of international flights. The region of Murcia has many popular amenities for visitors to enjoy. Just fifteen minutes from Cartagena lies the Mar de Menor, an area renowned for its calm waters, ambient year round climate and the sandy beaches of La Manga. The La Manga Club itself approx. 30 mins by car from Cartagena, offers incredible sporting facilities - three of the finest golf courses in Spain as well as a host of other sporting and leisure activities.

During Winter months – in under 4 hours, you can be in the mountains of Sierra Nevada to the west, for some great skiing. For the culturally minded, the city of Cartagena holds a feast of history dating from 229 BC. Each corner, street and square bears witness to the historical splendour of the city’s past civilizations, each having left their mark on the city as we see it today.
