The Caribelle Batik Studio, set within the magnificent garden of Romney Manor, demonstrates and produces exquisite multi-hued batik to create colourful, sensuous and fashionable dresses, shirts, kaftans, wraps, scarves, T-shirts, shorts, gift items and wall hangings. Here, visitors have the opportunity to observe the artists demonstrating various batik techniques and explaining this fascinating and ancient art form. A wander through the gardens is a delight in itself. The inspirational site was originally occupied by Sam Jefferson, third president of the USA. A relaxing rum punch from their Rainforest Bar is a fitting climax to your visit.
Romney Manor and Wingfield Estate
Beautiful grounds of 8 acres, steeped in fascinating history dating back to 1600’s – well worth a visit! The Home of Caribelle Batik.
Romney Manor and Wingfield Estate occupy approximately eight acres of grounds which are steeped in history and date back to the 1600’s – and there is also strong evidence of a Carib chief’s village occupying the site even before this time!
Both properties have had only five family owners to date – the first being Sam Jefferson II, the great, great, great grandfather of Thomas Jefferson, who purchased the property in 1625.
