Lawton (Antebellum) Cemetery

Dating back to the early 1800’s, in a double garaged sized plot divided by several tall trees and shadowed by the residential homes of the Sea Pines Plantation, you will bear witness to the final resting place of a small group of African Americans. Enchanting yet disquieting and deeply touching, are the very informal but tender headstone inscriptions in the “tabby” cement likely etched by hand as a lasting tribute to these former slaves. Location: Corner of Landing Road and 10 Oyster Lane in Sea Pines Resort (close to the 18th hole).
