Savannah National Wildlife Refuge

This little known “secret” is a great afternoon’s getaway. Free admittance grants you 4 miles of winding trails through the low country’s 29,000 acres of freshwater marshland, tidal rivers and creeks to view the flora and fauna in abundance at any time of the year. Whether your interest is to see migrating ducks and birds, or shrubs and flowering lillies, there is something for every nature lover. However, of more interest to most are the American Alligators - not always visible and yet sometimes, too close for comfort! Hiking and cycling are both permitted, but driving slowly is recommended. Located on US HWY 17 heading north into Jasper County, SC, it can be found about 6 miles from Savannah and is clearly signposted. The Visitor Center is open from Monday to Friday, 0900-1600hrs.

The park is open during daylight hours but dependent on wildlife recreation activities.
