Maritime School of the West Indies
"A highly professional set up” and “An excellent crew training facility” are two of the captains’ comments received this year for this well-known and respected official International Yachtmaster Training affiliated school – conveniently located in the centre of Marigot, St. Martin, on the lagoon. Principal for over 16 years, Veerle Rolus has run professional yacht courses such as the official six-day STCW'2010 (upgraded from STCW’95 and now includes Maritime Security Awareness), the IYT Master of Yachts 200 Ton Limited and Unlimited, the Small Powerboat and RIB / Tender license (required for operation in the Mediterranean and other places), VHF radio course, Personal Watercraft (Jet Ski/Wave Runner) courses, Mega Yacht Crew course and others.
All the professional courses are MCA approved and recognized worldwide. Their rates are mostly lower than anywhere else, and courses are never cancelled, even when enrollment is low! They also run a broad range of other yachting related courses - like the Bareboat Charter Captain's license for recreational yachtsman, and beginner’s dinghy and sailing courses etc.
In addition, the school offers customized courses such as firefighting and First Aid on board large yachts, and can send instructors to other islands like Antigua, Grenada, Tortola, Curacao etc. upon request.
The Maritime School of the West Indies also offers safety courses for Pilots and counts airlines as Winair, SXM Air, Jet Budget and others (including helicopter companies and superyacht helicopter crew) as clients.
The school can easily be reached from all the major marinas in the lagoon by dinghy, tender or by local bus.
The school is temporarily located at Geminga Shipyard next to Island Water World in Marigot.
Online reservations, bookings and secure credit card payments are available.
Check out their website and Facebook page for more information, course schedules etc.
