North West Coast Drive

The coast road up into the mountains and through the villages of the north west coast – is an experience not to be missed (and one that we received many recommendations for!). The coastal road is newly re-surfaced and offers breathtakingly beautiful views of the rugged coastline, if you come from Andratx it dips up and down through pine forests and picturesque villages such as Estellencs and Banyalbufar, where people come from afar to see the steeply terraced hillsides tumbling down to the sea.

The Moors built these terraces over a thousand years ago, when they were planted with vines, they are still cultivated to this day and make an impressive sight as the road winds through the villages. Continuing north, the road passes close to Valldemossa and on through the classically pretty village of Deia for maybe a lunchtime stop at the El Olivio restaurant in the well known La Residencia Hotel. After lunch, a short drive drops down from the mountains to the bustling town of Soller – surrounded by citrus groves – and a visit to the attractive small port and beach rounds off a perfect day, before taking the quick route back to Palma through the newly opened tunnel cutting through the Tramontana Mountains.
