Habitation Clement – Le Francois

This beautiful and historic plantation house is located close to Le Francois on Martinique’s beautiful East coast. Historically restored, the house, grounds and highly productive rum factory offer an insight into four different ‘worlds’ that have been unique to Martinique: the Creole World, the Botanical World, the Industrial World, and the World of Rum.

The Creole World recalls the architecture and domestic life of a bygone era, evoking a real atmosphere of ‘yesteryear’. The habitation home - on two floors - and domestic quarters retain their original antique furniture and furnishings, and are open for a fascinating viewing. The kitchen and its adjoining garden have been reconstructed as original; and there is an exhibition of the history of the estate and home in the old stables. In addition to the majestic tropical trees surrounding the house, the Botanical World offers visitors the opportunity to wander through 16 hectares of parkland and gardens – featuring a tropical orchard, a palm grove and many water features. For further interest, all 300+ botanical species in the gardens are clearly identified. 

Sited in the ancient rum distillery, the Industrial World explains the history and the mechanism of the original ancient steam-driven machines, now restored to working order. A series of exhibits recalls the history and manufacture of rum whilst exploring the industrial heritage and working conditions of the era. 

The World of Rum pays tribute to the tradition of Habitation Clément’s rum manufacturing, and acknowledges the succession of ‘masters of cellar’ through the generations. Inside the four cellars - amongst the heady wooden perfumes and alcohol fumes - the ageing processes are explained, and the pyramids of barrels where the rum is slowly maturing can be admired. 

In addition to the series of interpretation panels located throughout the grounds, an audio-guide is available, providing informative insight into Habitation Clément beyond the aesthetic experience of wandering through the beautiful grounds and buildings.
