Château des Baux de Provence
Quick links: Contact Description Reviews
Just north east of Arles, an hour and a half from La Ciotat, lies the village of Les Baux de Provence with its medieval Château. Perched on top a rocky outcrop, it stands witness to a turbulent military past punctuated by repeated assaults. The stout ‘keep’ dominating the site is a reminder that at one time, numerous people wanted to take control of Provence. The Sarrasine tower gets its name from the fact that it faces south, where Saracen raiders came from. The Paravelle tower was mainly used as a lookout tower, rising high above the Château des Baux de Provence courtyards on one side, and over the valley on the other. Open in Spring: 0900-1830; Summer: 0900-2030; Autumn: 0930-1800; Winter: 0930-1700hrs.
