Pompeii

The catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD spanned two days, with Pompeii buried under 4-6m of ash & pumice. Pompeii was lost for over 1,500 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1599. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. 

The Circumvesuviana Napoli-Sorrento train takes 30 to 40 minutes to get to Pompeii from Naples. SITA runs buses from Naples, by car, take the A3 motorway towards Salerno and take the Torre del Greco exit, following the signs to Pompeii.
