Overview

The old capital of Malta, abandoned in the 16th Century, is now a World Heritage site and is a typical medieval town situated on one of the highest hills of the island. The ‘Silent City’, as it is known, commands a magnificent view of the island – the reason it was situated here. It was abandoned because it was too far from the sea to defend Malta, so Valletta was built and the population relocated.
