Operation Viti - Disaster Relief for Tonga

Caroline Blatter

"Getting the right aid to the right people at the right time"

The Team at YachtAid Global is working to deliver emergency aid on the ground in Tonga, in association with The National Emergency Management Agency, community leaders and their coalition partners, assessing the needs of the people affected by the tsunami and eruption of the underwater volcano Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai.

The volcanic eruption on 15th January 2022, an underwater blast that lasted eight minutes, sent ash 60,000 feet into the sky in a 5km plume. The impact was felt as far away as Peru, with ‘violent’ waves reaching 6,200 miles across the Pacific. Tonga was slammed by a tsunami wave of 1.2 metres.
The impact immediately severed communication lines, cutting off the islands from the rest of the world.

The tsunami and ash fall wreaked havoc across the islands of Tonga, with widespread damage to property, food sources, water supply and health with respiratory issues.
Our heartfelt compassion and concern are for those in Tonga whose lives have been impacted by this devastation.

One hundred percent of all donations contributed will go to the disaster relief needed by the people of Tonga.

YachtAid Global is committed to the judicious use of funds and getting the right aid to the right people at the right time. Please consider supporting the work they do, by donating.
