A strong fleet for the start of Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup - Porto Cervo

The 31st edition of Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup takes place from the 5th-11th September 2021 after a year's absence, and is the third of five events in the IMA 2021 Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge.

Organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) in conjunction with the International Maxi Association (IMA), this year’s Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup has an impressively strong fleet, with 45 yachts entered from across the globe spread across the three fleets - Super Maxi, Maxi and Mini Maxi.

Stealing the show in the Super Maxi Class will once again be the magnificent J Class yachts Velsheda and Topaz, their owners & highly experienced crews sail them around the course with all the intensity of America’s Cup racing, for which most were designed.
The modern classic Geist, at 111 ft from Spirit Yachts will also be joined by the Nautor Swan 115 Shamanna and Vittorio Moretti's Maxi Dolphin 118 Viriella.

There's hot competition in the Maxi Class which includes six 100 ft yachts, thanks to the inclusion of several Wally Yachts - Magic Carpet CubedGalateia and Y3K. The new race optimised Swan 98 Be Cool joins them, as well as ComancheRambler 88Arca SGR, the new Botin 85 Deep BlueHighland Fling XI, Swan 82 Kallima, and Swan 80 Umiko.

A fleet of former Maxi 72s will be highly competitive on the water in the Mini Maxi Class, with Bella Mente, the highest rated of the Maxi 72s fighting it out with amongst others Proteus and Vesper, and newly acquired North-Star (formerly Sorcha). Joining many in this class are Swan 601's and IMA President Benoît de Froidmont’s Wally 60 Wallyño.
Swan 65 Alpha Centauri of London, 64 footer Stella Maris & a Dehler 60 Blu Oyster are among the lowest rated Mini Maxi's.

De Froidmont commented: “It is a great pleasure finally to return to Porto Cervo both as a sailor and President of the IMA.

As a sailor, the Costa Smeralda offers some of the most tactically challenging sailing in the most picturesque of surroundings. In our hosts the YCCS, we could not hope for a better co-organiser of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, maxi yachting's premier event. This year's entry, including a wealth of new yachts across the fleet, shows that the desire of owners to race their maxi yachts has never been greater. I wish everyone good competition.”

One reason they come to Porto Cervo every year is because competition here is the highest available...sailing elite in sailing heaven!

Let's hope the weather is kind, winds fair and COVID remains under control, so all yachts and their crew can enjoy 5 days of incredible racing!
