Located in Sub Base, this business is run by Charles Vowell (known as Mr. Wizard!) who started out as an apprentice working on the Panama Canal, some 41 years ago. Since then, he has worked all over the world on a huge variety of different projects... giving him great flexibility, and an open-minded approach to solving any unusual tasks one might have. This has even seen him drilling some broken bolts out of one customer's artificial leg, that he'd unscrewed there in the shop - once Charles said he could fit it into the vice! Besides the more unusual jobs, he specializes in aluminum and stainless steel machining, welding and custom fabrication works... with a real commitment to quality. He is, in fact, what is known in the trade as a ‘master machinist’, and is probably one of the best accomplished time served machining craftsmen available in the USVI... and perhaps beyond. His workshop has a good level of tooling and machinery, and this year, he is once again looking for a suitable second engineer to work alongside him. In fact Charles cautioned us that, these days, he has to limit his workloads due to intermittent health problems. It is therefore advisable to phone him in advance – but rest assured if you ask for any intricate technical machining work from some of the other companies, there’s a good chance that behind the scenes, Charles Vowell will still be the master machinist who is behind the work... and asked to carry out the task.
