ELECTRICAL / ELECTRONICS
We received a whole round of enthusiastic feedback for Island Yacht Services and its manager Jim Thompson. Jim is an electrical engineer who worked in nuclear instrumentation and software development, and now specializes in marine electrical and electronics systems. Very popular among the most prominent and largest yachts, he also works a lot as a subcontractor for all the major shipyards of the region. His expertise is sought after on new builds and he works in collaboration with naval architects, to create electrical drawings. He can install, refit or repair any electrical or electronic related system and integrated computerized navigation systems… and troubleshooting is one of his best skills. As one Captain told us “Jim Thompson is a real genius in his field, he always finds the source of the problem”. Jim has a fully equipped van and will service yachts anywhere in the Newport / Jamestown / Fairhaven / Bristol area.

Ian Leslie is the one man show behind Marine Electrical Works, which he established three years ago. After working as a professional yacht engineer and Captain, he worked as a technician for a few of the other electrical companies in the Newport area. He has done refits on yachts from 30' to 170'. During the summer he spends most of his time trouble shooting electrical and electronics problems on boats in and around the Newport area. Ian promises to respond to all enquiries within 24 hours. As an independent contractor, Ian can provide his clients with an honest assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of the products available from the major electrical equipment companies. He also has a good working relationship with manufacturers and can get replacement parts and equipment in a few days. Ian is currently a dealer for Balmar alternator and regulators. We received good comments about his services, such as: “Ian Leslie is excellent in his field” “He is affordable and he knows how to work on a yacht”. Contacts:
Manager Paul Connolly and his company North Star Marine Systems were said to be “excellent” by several Captains we interviewed. Paul used to be a Captain and yard manager in several full service yacht facilities. His company - founded in 1993 - offers mobile marine electrical and electronics services. They specialize in classic yacht restorations / service, and have done numerous complete electrical and electronic refits of Herreshoff, Sparkman and Stephens, Alden, Rhodes, and Hood designed yachts from 50' to 100'. They handle both sailing and motor yachts. They are fully insured and all installations are done in compliance with current A.B.Y.C. and / or I.S.O. standards. They have access to all major brands of equipment… and as Paul proudly says: “100 % of our projects have come from referrals”. Contacts:
(see also ‘Refrigeration / Air Con.’ and ‘Watermaker’ sections) Highly acclaimed Ocean Options is the field office for any Mastervolt issues… from Maine to the Chesapeake. A team of experienced technicians, managed by Michael Bowden, can provide a complete check-up of the existing electrical system on board and create any updated installations, as necessary. They give a detailed analysis of what went wrong, and will also take the time to explain how the system operates. They work a lot with shipyards all over the world - on new builds or refits - for which they design and custom build any system upon request. Contacts: |
