Several Captains recommended the full size Home Depot, part of the well known national chain, for their green cleaning products. The store is on West Main Rd and opening hours are 0600-2100hrs Monday to Saturday and from 0900-1800hrs on Sunday.

Newport Nautical Supply is a chandlery based at the entrance of Newport, offering a complete selection of marine supplies at discount prices. They have a large stock and thanks to their excellent network, can also provide a fast turnaround on special orders. This family run business is managed by Bud Heaton and his son Chris – both avid sailors - for whom we received very good feedback, along with their staff, who were said to be helpful and knowledgeable. As one Captain told us… “Newport Nautical Supply offer a first class service, I ordered a part and it was there the next morning, with no extra charge”.

Newport Shipyard Ship’s Store - Newport

Newport Shipyard have a good ‘in-house’ chandlery and parts sourcing department. They carry pretty much anything from cleaning products, nautical ware, paint (including Awlgrip) to clothes, sailing gear and shoes like the infamous Crocs. Do not leave without some cool looking Newport Shipyard-embroidered sailing gear! During the summer, the Ship’s Store stays open every day from 0700-1900hrs.

West Marine - Newport

The Newport West Marine, conveniently located a short drive from the marinas, (close to Wall Mart) came particularly well recommended by many Captains we interviewed. This large and attractively set up chandlery is part of a network of 375 stores created more than 30 years ago by visionary entrepreneur and sailor Randy Repass. They have a catalogue with more than 50 000 products, ranging from the rope that started it all, to the latest in marine electronics. Aware of the development of the Superyacht business in the region, manager Jan Costelloe makes a real effort to market her store towards this clientele. They have a large stock of cleaning products - available in larger containers - including West Marine, Star Bright, Mary Kate, Meguiar's, Shurhold, Teak Wonder, brushes and mops.

Jan Costelloe is an avid sailor who is very aware of the natural environment, and West Marine makes a point that the shop has a whole line of green products. They also have an extensive paint and varnish department, where most pro’s come to stock up. Their electronics section features a choice of GPS, Radars and VHFs for both marine and land applications and they have a safety equipment division with PFDs, harnesses, tethers, flares, reflectors, liferings and slings. West Marine has a large selection of ropes of different diameters, including New England ropes. They are one of the only chandleries to carry Fortress anchors of any size and Freedom fenders. The shop is also well known for carrying the largest Sperry Shoes collection, along with Gill sea boots, further to which they have a nice choice of yachting clothing and foul weather gear. Fishing, BBQ equipment and water toys have a whole division and specialized staff are available as well. Very customer orientated, the West Marine team will always take the ‘extra step’ to satisfy their clients. Any product from the catalogue is available within 24hrs, and orders can also be made via e-mail and brought to your boat. As manager Jan Costelloe says… “We really like to help and be involved”.
