Charleston - SC

Perhaps best-known in history as the site where the American Civil War began (Jan 9th 1861) Charleston carries numerous nicknames as evidence of its picturesque, colorful past and unfailingly charming ambience. It is often known as ‘The Holy City,’ due to its multitude of churches and ‘spires’ dotting its skyline and also as the ‘best-mannered’ city in the U.S, ( as coined by America’s most-published etiquette expert, Marjabelle Young Stewart). All of these attributes and reference to religious diversity, tolerance and warm hospitality still do not overshadow a discreet yet firm ‘rebel’ streak, still evident in many Charlestonian’s and indicative of their city’s fiercely independent history. As a historically important city and sea port, by the mid-18th century Charleston was a bustling trade center - the hub of Atlantic trade for the southern colonies and the wealthiest and largest city south of Philadelphia. By 1770 it was the fourth largest port in the colonies and the cultural and economic center of the American south. Today, Charleston has the second largest container seaport on the east coast (and the fourth largest in North America).

Nowadays, Charleston certainly makes for a notable tourist destination and the city docks also represent an excellent yachting destination, with most of the city’s technical and recreational facilities being located very close by to the recommended ‘stop-over’ marinas such as the highly recommended ‘Charleston City Marina Mega Dock’ or ‘Charleston Harbor Marina’ (see ‘Marinas’ section). Charleston’s historic district, today, is still preserved in its historical authenticity with cobblestone streets lined with enormous live oaks and beautiful 18th and 19th century mansions. Along the waterfront between Sullivan’s Island Beach and the marina is Battery Park and ‘The Battery’ - where a very impressive row of 19th century mansions look out over the water.

In summary, Charleston really does represent an excellent harbor facility, and as a strategic port of call, Charleston is always regarded by both Captains and owners alike as a favorite destination and safe haven on the east coast North American circuit.
