Connecticut is a quintessential New England State, which has a beautiful coastal region including lovely historic towns with white church steeples rising above the horizon, as well as being the southern gateway to New England. It is a small State that offers a lot of variety for yachts sailing up the coast, with full service boatyards for major refit works, and marina facilities with all the modern amenities visiting yachts require, that include Brewers Pilot Point Marina in Westbrook and the Mystic Shipyards in Mystic. The Connecticut River Valley has a few river villages up the coast, including The Essex Island Marina offering berthing for transient vessels. The lower reaches of the Connecticut River are so unspoiled by development that they were on the list of ‘last great places’ in the Western Hemisphere.
When visiting the Mystic Seaport museum you can see a recreation of the life of the old sailing ship days which leads you back in time, as it was once a ship building and whaling center from the 17th to the 19th centuries, and is now still functioning as a working shipyard. The Connecticut coastline shares the waterways of Long Island Sound with a short distance between Long Island, Block Island and New York City.
