About The Azores

Contact Horta Marina on VHF 16 for arrival formalities, or contact Duncan Sweet from Mid Atlantic Yacht Services for ALL support, even those passing through, staying at anchor.

The Portuguese archipelago of the Azores comprises of nine volcanic islands, which extend for more than 350 miles in the mid Atlantic Ocean.
Located approximately 1,000 miles from the Straits of Gibraltar, 1900 miles from Bermuda and 2,400 miles from the east coast U.S.A  – these islands have over the years, provided seafarers with a welcome safe haven from any strong Atlantic weather, as well as an opportunity for crew to rest and carry out repairs.

The Azores, in common with the Canary Islands are actually the tops of some of the tallest mountains on the planet, when measured from their base at the bottom of the ocean.
Mount Pico on the island of Pico reaches 2,351m and is the highest in all of Portugal, It is often the first sight of land for yachtsmen when approaching from the west. The surrounding waters of the Azores offer beautiful and unspoilt cruising grounds, abundant in sea life, dolphins abound and whales can often be spotted breaching close to shore. The most significant industries here are tourism, cattle raising for milk and meat, and fishing. Exotic fruits such as pineapples and other fresh produce are readily available in season; whilst the islands vineyards produce their own local wines, as do the farms with their own cheeses.

Feedback from numerous Captains who have cruised The Azores with owners is that they highly recommend and loved the trip! They could not speak highly enough of the services of Mid Atlantic Yacht Services, Duncan Sweet and his team are able to tackle just about any problem on board.

Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, is the capital of the archipelago with an international airport & a marina, Ponta Delgada Marina.

The highly recommended Horta Marina is on the island of Faial, a favourite destination of many yachtsmen, with its traditions, seafaring history and charm. The shops, bars and restaurants of the town are within easy walking distance… and not least of all, one of the yachtsman’s world-renowned bars - Peter Café Sport

It has been a tradition among sailors to leave a painting on the sea wall or marina quay in Horta, with the yacht's name and her crew, that’s if you can find a free space! Many an afternoon can be spent wandering the dock, looking at these colourful paintings.

The Azores are the World's first certified archipelago endorsed as a sustainable tourism destination, by Earth Check, an organisation accredited by the Global Council for Sustainable Tourism.
Environmental sustainability of the Azores is essential, fuelling a vision of respect towards nature, a commitment of care.

Air links are excellent considering the remote location of the Azores with daily flights from Lisbon (mainland Portugal) to the islands of Sao Miguel, Terceira and Faial and direct flights from Boston (USA) and Canada to São Miguel.
