Comprising of an extensive archipelago of approximately 17,508 islands, the Republic of Indonesia shares maritime borders across narrow straits with Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines lying to the North, and Australia to the South. With further land borders neighbouring Papua New Guinea and East Timor, the entire region has cultivated a rich history of maritime trading and social diversity since the early days of New World shipping. Nowadays, this region has become very well known amongst visiting yachts for it’s wonders of nature to be found both above and below the waterline – above, within the tropical rainforests or below, whilst diving on the pristine coral reefs. Lying a little to the North, the dive sites of Palau are well recommended as being some of the best worldwide.
