A reminder that the village of St-Tropez was one of the most active 'avant garde' artistic communities at the beginning of the 20th century becomes clear with a visit to the Annonciade Museum in the old chapel at the west side of the harbour. When artist Paul Signac sailed around the coasts of Europe in his yacht Olympia, painting the landscapes he encountered, he was so enamoured by St-Tropez that he set up his painting studio here. Many of his artistic friends followed him, and the Museum now displays a selection of paintings from the Pointillist, Nabist and Fauvist periods featuring Signac, Matisse, Seurat, Cross, Bonnard, Vuillard, and others. The Annonciade Museum is one of the most interesting on the French Riviera. Closed on Tuesdays.
